Now Serving 800 Elementary Students Every Week

Superhero Yoga Expands to 3 Partner Schools, Tripling Impact for the 2019-2020 School Year

October 2019

Superhero Yoga is excited to announce partnerships with 3 elementary schools for the 2019-2020 Academic Year: Crossroads Academy - Central Street and Academy for Integrated Arts in Kansas City, MO and Emerson Elementary in Kansas City, KS. Beginning this October, approximately 800 students across these 3 elementary schools will receive weekly 30-minute Superhero Yoga sessions as part of their school day. “All of our Superhero Yoga teachers are passionate about what they are doing in the classroom with their yoga students.

"We are thrilled to bring yoga and mindfulness to more students, because these practices empower them to feel more in control of their bodies and minds. The lifelong ripple effect for individual students and our community is immeasurable.” —Janis King, Superhero Yoga Founder and CEO

Superhero Yoga is a combination of mindful movement and breathing. It is a time for students to take a break from everything else and focus on themselves. Yoga enables students to get in touch with their bodies and minds and deepen their own personal beliefs. While any physical exercise can be beneficial to young people, research shows that yoga is particularly powerful in helping students succeed:

• Increased mindfulness, not just in class, but also in other areas of a child’s life (Harvard Health, 2015).

• Improved social skills (Beltran, et al., 2016).

• Improved emotional regulation and school engagement (Frank, et al., 2017)

• Improved executive function, including improved focus and reduced impulsivity (Diamond, 2011).

Whether a student is sitting quietly on their mat breathing with the class, or actively participating in yoga postures, they will benefit from the yoga practice. Current research indicates that participation in yoga, mindfulness, meditation and breathing techniques helps students improve focus at school, improves their ability to control their bodies and voices, and decreases feelings of stress and anxiety. Regular yoga practice teaches students to see that they have the power to choose to pause and take a breath before reacting in stressful situations. At the same time, yoga trains their nervous systems more directly, to find calm more quickly.

Founded in 2017, Superhero Yoga Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to bringing the healing benefits of yoga to students attending under-resourced schools in the Kansas City area. Superhero Yoga teachers are formally trained in yoga (200-hour certification) with additional training and/or experience with trauma-informed yoga, yoga for youth, and working with children.

Superhero Yoga provides all yoga instruction to students enrolled in elementary school at partner schools, at no cost to the students or schools. Superhero Yoga is fully funded through generous donations by members of our community. Your financial support makes it possible for Superhero Yoga to continue to send qualified trauma-informed yoga instructors into under-resourced schools. Donations are gratefully accepted by credit card via our website, can be mailed to Superhero Yoga Fund, or made through your donor-advised fund. All donations are tax-deductible.
